Urbana Honored as an Ohio Magazine Best Hometown

Urbana will be featured in the cover story of the November issue of Ohio Magazine—as the magazine’s selection as Best Hometown of southwest Ohio.

The magazine’s editors selected one city as Best Hometown for 2011 from each of five regions in the state. The selection was based on several factors, including community spirit; education; attractions; celebrations and events; health and safety; business environment; and culture and heritage.

Richard Osborne, publisher and editor of Ohio Magazine, first announced Urbana’s selection to Doug Crabill, Urbana’s assistant director of administration: “Your achievement is especially impressive in light of the fact that Ohio is home to many of the best hometowns in America. Only one town is chosen from each of the state’s five regions for this very special honor. This award recognizes that Urbana is among the best of the best.”

In addition to the featured coverage in November, Ohio Magazine will highlight Urbana in its “Best of Ohio” edition in January and will again put the spotlight on Urbana in the June issue, which will feature travel opportunities. Information and a video about Urbana will be posted on the Ohio Magazine website in November.

“We are excited and honored to receive this recognition,” said Tina Knotts, executive director of the Champaign County Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau.  “The standards the magazine’s editors used to choose Urbana are the same criteria families use when they’re looking for the ideal place to live. This recognition will help us get the word out so more people can discover the excellent life we have here in Urbana and Champaign County.

“We already knew Urbana is an excellent place to live, but it’s very pleasing to gain objective—and very public—confirmation and recognition of that.”

Urbana Mayor Ruth Zerkle said, “This is an honor that belongs to all citizens of Urbana. We all can celebrate it. It takes everyone working together—businesses, education, charitable organizations, churches, citizens and government—to make a hometown you can be proud of.  I’m indeed proud of what we have accomplished here in Urbana.”

Plans will be made for representatives of Ohio Magazine to make an award presentation at a celebration in Urbana.

The first public announcement of Urbana’s selection as Best Hometown will be made during the Hoopla Parade in downtown Urbana, Saturday, September 11. The parade will begin at 1 p.m. In celebration, the Champaign County Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau will serve cupcakes to the public at 2 p.m., after the parade, on Monument Square.  Cupcakes compliments of Steve's Market, Walmart and Kroger.

Other towns selected are Wapakoneta, for northwest Ohio; Worthington, central; Zanesville, southeast; and Medina, northeast.
