Teen Leadership - June 9 - 13, 2008

Congratulations to the members of the upcoming Teen Leadership Academy: Dylan Bair, Erika Birt, Christopher Combs, Kelsey Eastham, Maggie Eckstein, Katie Finney, Darby Flanigan, Cody Johnson, Mersedes Kennedy, Cheyenne McNutt, Kelsey Oakley, Josh Olden, Erik Thomas, Austin Wilson and Molly Ziegler.

 

Teen Leadership Academy is a community development program in which high school sophomores and juniors living or attending school in Champaign County can gain knowledge, skills and experiences to be effective leaders in our communities.

 

Class participants develop their leadership skills and gain an in-depth understanding of the Champaign County community by interacting with community and business leaders during five full day sessions. Discussions, hands-on challenges, and tours of facilities throughout the county are among the approaches used to help participants become a much more informed part of the community. The 2008 Academy will include:

 

Saturday, June 7, 2008 - Students and parents will have an opportunity to get to know one another and answer questions about the program. This session will be held from 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. at Ohio Caverns.

Monday, June 9, 2008 - St. Paris Day, Experience western Champaign County as we spend the day in St. Paris.  The day will look at the history and culture of Champaign County

Tuesday, June 10, 2008 - Urbana Day, The program explores the economic history of Champaign County.  We will explore the tangible and intangible ingredients of quality living int eh area.  In addition, this day will include a luncheon with community leaders.

Wednesday, June 11, 2008 - North Lewisburg Day. Agriculture is a hallmark of Champaign County.  On this day students will experience the impact it has on our community.  During this day students will be presented with an overview of the current educational sturcture in our communities as well as challenges facing both public and private schools.

Thursday, June 12, 2008 - Mechanicsburg Day. Students will visit the Mechanicsburg communtiy while exploring the economic hisory and future of Champaign County.

Friday, June 13, 2008 - Government & Political Systems Day. We will review the justice system, juvenile crime and various county agencies.  The students will explore current issues and future trends related to law and justice in Champaign County.  Additionally, this session focuses on how city, county and state governments operate.

Friday, June 13, 2008 - Graduation Celebration.  Parents are invited to celebrate the completion of the Leadership Academy.

  

 

The 2nd Teen Leadership Academy graduated on April 18, 2007. High School sophomores and juniors from all five county schools met once a month to develop their leadership skills and learn more about Champaign County. Congratulations to the following members of the Teen Leadership Academy: Natalie Brugger, Adam Burris, Natasha Cheek, Cecilia Cohn, Travis Collier, Lindsay Eckurd, Hannah Gundolf, Megan Loveless, Carly Marks, Caitlyn Massie, Thomas Nance, Kiaya Nelson, Daniel Pelfrey, Chelsea Pendergrass, Ann Randall, Ashley Rutan, Mercedes Sells, Jessica Shanahan and Michael Smith.
